EuP Working Document on a possible Commission regulation for ac induction motors

Posted on 23 January 2009

The European Commission (EC) has circulated a working document on a possible Commission regulation with regard to motors and their drives, which is currently undergoing inter-service consultation in advance of the meeting of the Eco-design of Energy-using Products Framework Directive (the EuP Directive) Regulatory Committee on Motors, which is expected to take place on 11 March. The text can be viewed here.

Key aspects of the draft regulation which have changed since it was discussed at the Consultation Forum in May 2008 are:
- Scope - has been widened and now includes Variable Speed Drives
- Eco-design Requirements - the level of ambition has increased
- Exclusions on a number of motor types have been removed

In order to inform the UK position, interested stakeholders are encouraged to review these documents and provide written comments. It is expected that the Draft Implementing Measure will be received in mid-February, and will be made available on the MTP website for further comment.

There will also be an opportunity to raise issues at the forthcoming UK EuP Stakeholders meeting on 11 February - details are available here.

Responses should be sent to with 'EuP Draft Working Paper Motors' in the subject line.

Feedback is requested as soon as possible but no later than Friday 5th February.
