The Ampere Strikes Back
20/07/2007
A new report from the Energy Saving Trust reveals that the proliferation of home entertainment equipment, such as DAB radios, flat screen TVs and laptops, is undermining efforts to manage domestic energy demand to curb the effects of climate change. The ‘Ampere Strikes Back’ report predicts that, by 2020, entertainment, computers and gadgets will account for 45% of electricity used in the home.
The report addresses issues such as: new, higher specification versions of electronic gadgets tend to consume more electricity than the products they replace; it’s easy to leave electrical products switched on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; and products are used in ways undreamt of just a few years ago.
The Market Transformation Programme provided the majority of the figures used in the report, along with some of the explanations.
