Independent Report Recommends on MTP Development

01/03/2004

A new report by the Advisory Committee on Consumer Products and the Environment (ACCPE), From Principles to Action (see also separate news item, has repeated its call that "the Market Transformation Programme warrants further resources and extended coverage". Furthermore it recommends that "its approach [should be] applied to different impacts and a wider range of products" (p14).

It singles out in particular the work done by MTP on the food sector (p17), from which MTP has published a Policy Brief (click here) and Briefing Notes for the chicken supply chain):

"MTP has provided an effective overview of the issues for all in the supply chain, backed by a numerate modelling approach which provides an effective assessment of policy. Its open method of policy modelling also provides for a well-balanced and consensual approach to policy development. "

It went on "In short, our work has shown that the underlying approach adopted by the
MTP provides a good analytical tool for food sector decision-making and, flexibly applied, is potentially transferable to other food products and sectors."

It concluded that "In relation to the food industry supply chain, we recommend that the broad approach of the Market Transformation programme is developed as part of the forthcoming Food Industry Sustainability Strategy, analysing selected impacts through the supply chain of particular foodstuffs."
