About MTP > Case Studies

The following case studies demonstrate how the MTP has achieved market transformation. Each case study outlines the problem, approach and outcomes of our actions, including economic and environmental benefits:

Case Study 01: External power supply units (431 kB)
01 November 2005
In 2005, the UK will save an estimated 1TWh from mobile phone power supplies – enough to power over 200,000 homes.

Case Study 02: Domestic boilers (148 kB)
01 November 2005
By 2010, the increased use of condensing boilers will reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 500,000 tonnes/year.

  Case Study 03: Non-domestic lighting (299 kB)
01 November 2005
MTP influenced the development of lighting targets and a UK rebate programme that saved 1.3TWh/year of electricity.

Case Study 04: Commercial refrigeration (388 kB)
01 November 2005
MTP made a significant contribution to the development of Enhanced Capital Allowances leading to an increase in the uptake of energy efficient equipment in the UK.

Case Study 05: Digital TV adapters (169 kB)
01 November 2005
MTP's influence on the eco-design of digital TV technology has been a major factor in achieving an estimated energy saving of 1 TWh/year in 2005.

Case Study 06: Developing new ENERGY STAR® specifications (55 kB)
07 February 2008
The European Commission has an agreement with the US Government to co-ordinate the energy labelling of high efficiency office equipment through the EU ENERGY STAR programme. This Case Study outlines the development of new ENERGY STAR specifications.

Case Study 07: Improved methodology for evaluating UK energy savings from products (428 kB)
27 March 2008
The Market Transformation Programme (MTP), with the Australian Greenhouse Office, developed an improved methodology to assess the effectiveness of product policy (eg energy labelling and minimum energy performance standards (MEPS)).

Case Study 08: Developing Codes of Conduct for energy efficiency of electronic equipment (499 kB)
28 March 2008
In 1999, a European Commission Communication to the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament set the political frame for a new set of Codes of Conduct (CoC). Rather than draw up statutory regulations, the preferred approach was to negotiate voluntary CoCs that would set new EU criteria for energy performance.
